Telemark
Skiing, Crested Butte style! Talk to most tele skiers and
they'll tell you that Crested Butte is the American home
of Telemark skiing. In the late 1970s, Rick Borkevec
and his cronies were bored with alpine skiing and began
to experiment with "free-heel"
skiing. The ensuing 30 years have seen an unfathomable
change in the way we carve our tele turns. The gear,
the techniques, and the talent have pushed our ability
to unheard-of limits. Folks who have either worked at The
Alpineer or shop here regularly have been backcountry and
tele skiing almost since the beginning. And we dedicate
our time and inventory in the winter to those ends. It
is our passion and our business. In fact, we have a separate
website, TelemarkSki.com,
devoted specifically to the fine art of telemark skiing.
In addition, we have just about everything you need for
all your backcountry, alpine touring, Nordic and skate
ski pursuits!

Winter begins early here in the
high country. By Halloween most years, we're
ski touring up some of the roads that only a few weeks
earlier saw knobby tires. It's time to start thinking about
all the new gear as we watch our playground fill
in with snow. Keep an eye on our backcountry report and
check back regularly for conditions here at 10,000 feet.
